That could be true also, if your sump pump has a fractional-HP motor. They only run for 5-15 minutes at a time, anyway.

But, a home-sized engine-generator system (2kW to 10kW+ by Honda, Kohler, Onan, MIL-Surplus, etc.) connected to your home's circuit breaker panelboard with an automatic transfer switch is a better way to handle that stuff. That's why my house has two panelboards, one for convenience loads and the other for the big appliances and kitchen equipment.

It's all a matter of proper planning. I have air-solar built-in and two huge fireplaces with several cords of wood in the garage. So all I need if for the air-handling unit fan to run to keep the whole house comfortable in the dead of winter
