Tommaso,

<The Canadian Dollar, among fiat currencies, is much more promising.>

That is a risky statement. After the no-Confidence vote in the house and whoever gets in doesn't matter because Quebec wants to secede and then so will Western Canada and they'll all wind up using US dollars.

The Canadian dollar may be a call option on resources, but you just found out your counterparty is Enron. Can you say counterparty risk?

Canada gave away the North to the Natives...Quebec got the lion's share of the riches of the Hibernia oil project off Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia wound up in the poorhouse. Ottawa spends 24/7 thinking up strategies to loot Alberta's riches. It is Ralph Klein's top worry. You and I are heavily exposed to that and it is called political risk.

Dig a hole for some resources, find a bone, the next thing you know its an Indian Burial Ground and there's a moratorium on drilling for 5 years. The same thing happens in the US and the US Army Corps dumps tons of aggregate on the site, burying the evidence.

The Canadian politicians don't have the fortitude to manage the country's resources equitably and for the benefit of all Canadians.

Due to the fact that I think I *should* bet on Canada and the Canadian dollar as a call option on resources, I do, but I am not sure it is a solid bet. Just look at what is happening right now with the Loonie, with the scandals. The country is being torn apart. Chile is a better run country.
