The great socks debate -

This is actually less serious than the "Bannana Trade War" with the EU. I don't think theres any real trade pressure, except maybe "Buy Boeing". Oh, and US cotton exports - got to make socks out of something.

While many US politicians are stupid, most are cynical - this is a ritual game. They are trying to look like they are doing something - without doing anything.

Japan was and to some degree is much more of an economic competitor. There were some real counter moves against Japan, much in the technology area, but some in cars. Now if the US can stop Japanese from building plants in China, and only let US companies have access to the lower costs and huge markets, that would be a "level playing field" ;-)

Happy to see parts of the Chinese government are helping this along by promoting certain anti-Japanese demostrations....

TobagoJack, Re: politicians. You may be mistaken if you believe that Washington politicians are actually trying to benefit the American public in any of their actions with regard to foreign policy. They are playing to the world stage and really don't give a damn about their home country. And its been this way for a long time, the last American President who truly tried to represent American interests in the world was Calvin Coolidge though Reagan and even JFK had a nationalist streak.

That doesn't mean that our leading politicians are out to help China, either. If their globalist counterparts in Europe and elsewhere, with whom they are closely networked, decide that China is becoming a nuisance then they will act accordingly.

When it comes to foreign policy there is really no difference between Bush or his father before him and Clinton or Kerry for that matter. No difference. There are some differences in their domestic policy though not near as much as all the rhetoric would suggest. And this has a long history, Woodrow Wilson was of the current variety as was FDR and every US president since.

A cousin married into the Jimmy Carter family and a whole bunch of people I have know all my life went to Washington with Carter and stayed for the duration. The things these people have come to believe in will make your hair stand on end. A leading Filipino, Mexican or Indonesian politician acts mainly in the interest of his countrymen, however mistakenly. I would assume the same is true in China. And I am sure that when such people go to say a ASEAN conference or visit the UN or some such that they may begin to think that they are "saving the world" ect. but when they get back home and are surrounded by only their countrymen they come back down to reality. That doesn't happen with these we have here; they are in permanent "save the world" mode.

J6P hasn't suffered a real disaster yet but if the country had been run by a bunch of men with the Calvin Coolidge worldview I think that J6P's lot would have been much better. And I truly believe that if these "one-worlders" of the current variety really screw up then afterwards we will be led by more practical and sober minded men wearing military uniforms. And who knows, we might be better off.

What? Has our arrival at TeoTwawKi been delayed? The Collapse is no longer imminent?

Lenovo

"<<US textiles factories had 14,000 workers fewer in March compared to a year before>>

... and so the US wishes to get back into the sock-making business, leaving the PC making to IBM (aka Lenova)"

Ahhh well already done, take a wild guess where IBM laptops are made...? (I work for IBM..) No need to move the factories when Lenovo takes over. Just change some Corporate Logos.

So petty, isn't it? Sounds like plenty of lip service that's more like "Penny-wise, pound-foolish", or "A day late, a dollar short". China has moved to machinery, power tools, white goods, turbines, computer chips, fine furnitures, fine textiles, mini-discs, digital cameras, photographic cameras, etc, etc., and soon automobiles, and ... and ... and .... even GM cars probably already have 50% of the components made in China. Those micro and mini-discs in cellphones are made in China.

All the socks and bras are for public perception, like something is being done about it, for the ding-dong American public mind. They'll be moved to Thailand and Malaysia and Laos, etc, etc, owned by Shenzhen and HK corporations.

In 5 years, I'll upgrade my pc with an IBM.

Har, har, har, har!!!!

Thanks, Jay, you finally convinced me to boycott China. I had a hard time sorting out the nice words and the harsh sneers, but the sneers finally come through loud and clear.

Japan, yes.

Taiwan, yes.

China, no.

I know you'll dump on me about "venom" etc., but I am just taking my cue from you.

You want to bury us, have at it. I won't help you.

If BubbaFred and Yiwu adore you, count me out.
