It certainly would be worse if we Americans had no prisons to keep those that refuse to recognize mine or your rights and the socially agreed upon level of behavior our society needs to function for the benefit of all. I don't believe you can allow yourself to think along such lines though. Your friends are users of crack cocaine and fathers that abandon their children. To bestow the honorable title of 'friend' on such people sets you at their level.
