Who bought the retail use of the Unocal name/

I think it was Philips, now ConocoPhilips. The brand name is now "76" rather than Union 76 but the look of the stations (lots of orange) is the same.

Lots of value in these old brand names even after the parent company disappears.

Arco is still a major marketer on the west coast long after the merger with BP and now Chevron is bringing back Texaco. They had to sell the rights to the Texaco name for three years to get antitrust clearance. They now have it back. They realize that it has star power and have already converted 1200 stations to the Texaco brand.
