OpenOffice can read or write MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint files, or it's own native format. I don't think they can do the right's management in Office '03 though but nobody where I work uses that.

OpenOffice for Windows, Solaris, Linux, with many languages supported. I think they are close to a new major release, too.

Lots of people where I work use OpenOffice and exchange documents with people using MS Office, and the latter do not know the difference.

If you do lots of complex math formulas (scripted in MS Word) then you might have more issues regarding compatibility.

And yes, it's free!

Mish, here are some free Linux office suite, two of them can be used both on Window and Linux. Looks like SOT Office is a better choice if the compatibility with MSFT is a big issue.

>>I can't see China paying MSFT for anything.<<

Some provincial gov. in China have had exclusive agreement using MS office software. So, yes, MSFT have made plenty of money from China although not as much as they would like. But I guess no one could ever fill Bill Gates appetite.

Software has zero cost of reproduction, and that is why Gates want Chinese market. Luckily, WPS office is Microsoft office compatible and is significantly cheaper, not to mention better compatible with other Chinese software, so more and more Chinese provincial gov. have switched to WPS office since last year.

It seems that they do not have multilanguage version for their office software, only Chinese version. I guess they just focus on Chinese market, which is big enough.

Mish,

I would go to openoffice.org and download the 1.9+ beta and check it out. I think it is quite nice. I have used it both on linux and Windows.
