Yiwu tells me workers are so well fed and clothed and housed in china that they don't work unless they get the pay they want. I understand your point, but progress is going to shift up the pyramid of maslow's hiearchy - that bottom rung of food and house is just not gonna have the same level of importance in the future as it did in the past - it will be a non concern - like polio - or either she is lying to me and all the people over there in china are starving and naked. You really believe for all of man's eternity that gold will be our future of trade? I guess you read a lot more history while I watched a lot more scifi channel and thus the differing viewpoints.

I watched clan of the cave bear with daryl hannah - it was important to be next to beasts of the field so you could survive and eat - modern technology makes it where you and I don't have to be close to the beasts of the field - it was important back then to have a strong body and be able to chuck spears - you and I can play deep sea virtual fishing and deer hunter on the computer instead - back when we were proteins in primordial soup it was important to have a violently raging planet with hot gasses and volcanoes and lightning striking us - but you wouldn't want a lightning bolt hitting you today would you? You wouldn't want to live within a few hundred feet or a mile of large MEAT bearing mastadons would you? Things change. I saw jurassic park 2 where the dino gets into the city - he is a relic no good for your modern life just like gold. When is the last time you chopped down a tree and made a spear?
