The "quality" of the NASDAQ COMP has been greatly aided by the flushing out of failing and bankrupt companies from the index that has been showing EPS losses in 2000. Something like 2,000 companies were delisted and a bunch of them came out of the NASDAQ COMP index. Sure, the quality of the index has improved, but if those "poor" companies had remained the earnings would have not looked as good and the index would surely be much lower than it is today.

Another point, the index is up some 80% from the low around 1,100 in Oct 2002, so perhaps that good earnings news has been discounted by the NASDAQ and if we see falling earnings going forward, the index may be at risk?
