Toyota April U.S. Vehicle Sales Up 21.3%

TORRANCE, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc.'s April sales rose 21.3% to 210,466 vehicles from 167,129 a year ago, helped by demand for hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles.

In a press release Tuesday, the Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) unit said April sales at its Toyota Division rose 23.7% to 184,402 vehicles from 143,574 a year ago.

Toyota Division passenger cars rose 41% to 112,002 vehicles during the month, led by a 13% jump in Camry sales to 40,435 vehicles.

Sales of the Prius gas-electric hybrid midsize sedan surged to 11,345 from 3, 684 a year ago.

Scion's April sales jumped to 15,802 vehicles from 5,721 sold a year ago.

Lexus passenger cars rose 3.4% to 12,425, while Lexus Division light trucks rose 9.6% to 13,639 vehicles sold during the month.

The RX 400h luxury hybrid vehicle, launched April 18, had April sales of 2,345 units.

Percentage changes are adjusted for selling days. April 2005 had 27 selling days, up from 26 a eyar earlier.
