My father once met a woman who had dozens of kittens around her house, but only a couple of adult cats. "Where are all the cats?" he asked. "Oh, I don't like cats, I just like kittens. When they get too big I skin them and tan the hides." Then she showed him a trunk full of tanned cat hides.

A man I knew visited a house in which hundreds of cats dwelled. The excrement on the floor was so deep he couldn't walk on it.

On the basis of these stories, Grainne, should I condemn all people who have a house cat? Should I condemn you because you have a house cat?

I'm glad that this came up because it's the point I've been trying to get across all along for most of the issues where you express a passionate view. If you could just see this, I'm sure we would be in agreement on almost everything.

People who interfere with the lawful activities of others are stepping over the line into lawlessness themselves.

Animal abuse is not lawful, so protesting animal abuse is an acceptable activity, in my view.

However, working to disrupt the Iditarod because a few persons abused their dogs does not qualify. Interfering with the wool industry because somebody in Australia treats their sheep in a barbaric way does not qualify. Burning down research laboratories that use animals does not qualify. Burning down ski resorts because they occupy lynx habitat does not qualify. Interfering with the cultural rights of others by dressing up in bunny suits and clanging on pots and pans does not qualify.

Turn in the neighbor who leaves their puppy out in the snow. Don't protest dog ownership.

Turn in the dog racer who abuses his dogs. Don't protest the Iditarod.

Turn in the sheepherder who performs that horrible mulesing. Don't protest sheepskin slippers and wool clothing.

Turn in the horse drawn carriage driver who doesn't give his horses enough food and water. Don't protest carriage rides.

Turn in animal abusers. Animal abuse is against the law.

I think your passion is dissipated because you use such a broad brush. You need to allow for people who legitimately pursue lawful activities.

Protest animal abuse, Grainne. Don't use such a broad brush.
