I guess it's exactly the fairy tale US Jesus freaks needed to psych up their despondent troops following the Schiavo dud... And a firefighter to boot!! Indeed, it wasn't lost on them that, ever since 911, the Firefighter has become America's folk hero par excellence... To be frank, I suspect the whole story is but a hoax spun by the Christian Right.

Re: In other words, according to Dr Rose Scherr, he was in a Permanent Vegetative State.

Here's another report that somehow debunks the PVS diagnosis:

Herbert's severe head trauma and prolonged oxygen deprivation kept him in a coma for 2 1/2 months.

He regained consciousness in 1996, but his speech was slurred, he was unable to eat without assistance, he was confined to a bed or wheelchair and his vision was reduced to a series of blurs.

Moreover, Herbert's memory seemed all but nonexistent. He could not say how old he was or what his job had been. He seemed unable to recognize family members and friends.

Bold are mine. Herbert's speech was slurred? Hell, at least, Herbert could slur something! Did the late Mrs Schiavo ever mumble anything?

And Herbert "seemed" unable to recognize... Again, that's a far better cognitive state than Mrs Schiavo's. Remember, the latter's eyes wouldn't even shift to gaze at a sudden bang or handclap by examiners...

So, all in all, I suggest you and I quietly wait for the dust to settle.
