I know of no greater authority than MacNamara and the Vietnamese themselves on the body count in Vietnam

I don't consider him the most accurate authority, or see any good reason to use his estimates when they are much higher than almost any other estimate.

MacNamara's obsession with body count is legendary

As was the inaccuracies of the body count. Sometimes deliberately too high, sometimes too low, sometimes just a guess.

I have not seen anything to persuade me that the number 5 million is not accurate -- of which 2 million were civilians killed in the American war.

Is that 5 million an estimate for the war while America was involved or for the whole series of conflicts from the end of WWII to the fall of Saigon and possible including the repression after the fall of Saigon?
