BTW did you ever see the movie, the Replacements?
It's a favorite of mine,

There was more on Edwards and the cheerleaders in today's Austin paper. It seems that some evangelical Republicans have been getting the call to disrupt the high school cheerleading. Why? you might ask.

It's competition from the evangelical private schools, where the girls are complaining that they don't get snappy outfits and cool music for their cheerleading and even suggest to their moms that they go back to public school. This has their parents, (who are required to love god as defined by their preacher more than their kids) complaining to their representatives and demanding that the public schools be just as uptight as the private ones. The representatives know that this is a ridiculous idea and would humiliate them in the eyes of the nation, so they made a deal with Edwards to sponser the bill, and in return they will back some pork legislation which would otherwise have no chance in the republican controlled house.

The bill is actually being pushed through by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst. Now in Texas even this absurdity can't be simple enough to have just one cause (this is the training ground of Karl Rove after all). Senator Kay Baily Hutchison is widely thought be be running for governor, replacing Dewhurst's mentor Rick Perry. Kay was a cheerleader in high school and at the University of Texas, and was apparently going to feature cheerleaders as sort of a fun prop in the background of her campaign. The current governor wanted to lower the favorable ratings for cheerleading in general, thereby making Kay look like a slut if she identifies her campaign with her cheerleading past.

This sort of menage-a-trois a common reason for stupid laws and actions in this state.
