The weight of a dugout would make it next to impossible, or difficult, to transport cross country. That's the biggest disadvantage. Weight might help a dugout be more stable, but hull shape is probably more important.

On a canoe gunwales are just the strip of heavier wood on the top edge of the hull between the inside and the outside. Most people pronounce it "gunnels." I suppose the derivation of the word came from men of war under sail.
