The only way of stopping illegal drug use is
1) make it legal OR
2) death sentence for anyone using drugs or caught with drugs

Actually there is another way but it sounds so far fetched that it can only be considered totally ridiculous.

Raise psychologically healthy children .

Eventually you will kill all the users with action #2

I don't think these are the only two options. I don't think it is possible to completely stamp out illegal drug use even if they are made legal. Consider that there is a big market for legal prescription drugs on the black market....viagra and valium anyone? I get twenty solicitations a month in my email for both.

An old friend of mine works with guys at City jail who are addicts. Most were brought in for some other reason because Baltimore does what most other big cities with a high population of addicts does, ignore users and arrest them only when they commit other crimes. He helps them get treatment while and after they do their time. For some, getting arrested is their only chance at getting help. I can tell you after years of seeing who makes it and who doesn't, that the guys with court slips have the same chance of getting clean and sober as those who walk into a 12 step under their own steam.

Most addicts start using drugs when they are children, too young to understand the full implications of casual use.... as most smokers start when they are too young to buy cigarettes legally (9-12 years old is the norm). Making drugs legal, wouldn't change that scenario just provide a cleaner supply source if we have the big pharmas pumping out pharmaceutical grade heroin, meth and cocaine.

Do you really think a country that feels compelled to pull a drug like Vioxx, with suspected serious side effects, off the market and then sanction drugs that are proven killers? The attitude Americans have about their right to use illegal drugs is more than a little bit hypocritical since if a legal prescription drug did the harm that the illegal ones do they'd sue for serious damages. Would you feel better if the money from overdoses went more to corporations than criminals? Or do you want more addictions to feed the public coffers, like tobacco, gambling and liquor does now? Maybe the government should have a vested interest in keeping people addicted.

Sometimes, there is no good solution, no final fix, just an array of bad outcomes and half fixes.
