JF, interesting column. I knew of Lincoln's "faith-based" style of governing, but I didn't know he waged a personal struggle between secularism and evangelism. Nor did I know that secularism was a strong force even in Lincoln's time.

I believe it was right from the beginning......hence the letters by Jefferson on the topic.

Lincoln's struggle with secularism/religion is nowhere more apparent than in his second inagural address. You should read it (not just skim it, it's short). It contains one of the most concise summaries of the dilemma ever written.

Lincoln had been not only comparing religion to secularism, but had been examining spiritualsim and other alternatives to find an answer to the great problems of his time.
