It should be safe to buy some time in 2006. Expectations on my part for an October bottom may prove incorrect but it does happen with regularity. The strong bull market of the 90's still gave us a recognizable bottom in October 1998.

How will we know when the next long term bottom has been formed?

We probably won't until it's far enough in the rear view mirror that everyone knows but when it is formed the volatility indices will be high and there will be more bears than bulls in the Investors Intelligence Poll along with a number of positive divergences in market breadth and other indicators like the BP Indices.
