The whole thing was just the sad kind of FUBAR stuff that happens in a war. The italians were probably worried about a re-kidnapping by another group. The Americans soldiers were probably worried about a car bomb, and anxious to stop it before it got too close. I read that three seconds passed before they started shooting the car. Not much time, for either party.

The italian journalist was a famous kidnap victim. How many times does this happen to non-famous, ordinary Iraqis? Two or three a week? If the military doesn't tell the press, how would we know?

Warning shots into the vehicle!

That would by definition not be warning shots.

...waving arms in a lit area, and by shining lights in a pattern normally used to tell cars to stop, and after that by firing warning shots..

Then by firing shorts in to the vehicle

Why do you think the driver ignored the waving arms? Not to mention the pattern of lights

I think he was nervous (as were the soldiers) and he was driving fast, probably with some reason as the road is dangerous. Driving fast increased the risk from checkpoints but probably reduced other risks.

Everyone knows that Americans are out of control crazy with their guns

Nonsense. The Americans are more careful then most when they are fighting a war. Of course they also have more firepower than anyone else and have been involved in more violent and potentially violent situations that most developed countries. And of course if the Americans do shoot or bomb the wrong person it gets a lot more press than it does when many other countries do the same thing.

I read that it was raining too which would have made seeing a patrol difficult, even if they did have waving hands. Maybe they looked like somebody catching a taxi on a wet night.

It would have probably made it harder, but I don't think it was just a handful of soldiers stumbling around in the rain. I think it was a bit more visible than that.
