LONDON — Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments decreased by 1.4 percent sequentially in the first quarter 2005, according to the Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) within the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) industry organization.

The total area of silicon wafers shipped in the first quarter was 1,465 million square inches, down from the 1,486 million square inches shipped during the previous quarter. The first quarter's total area shipments are 4.2 percent below first quarter 2004 shipments.

The first quarter 2005 total was made up of 1,107 million square inches of polished wafers, 307 million square inches of epitaxial wafers and 51 million square inches of nonpolished wafers, SEMI (San Jose, Calif.) said.

"Coming off of a record year, we expected and experienced a slight drop in unit shipments during the first quarter of 2005" said Makoto Tsukada, chairman of SEMI SMG and general manager of Shin-Etsu Handotai Co. Ltd. "However, we continue to see strong sequential growth in 300-mm wafer shipments."
