To explain: Entering one of Wegmans' stores in Virginia is like stepping into a super-size gourmet shop designed to look like a European open-air market. There's a French pastry shop, cheese shop, olive bar, kosher deli and a huge wine shop complete with tasting area.

"Cooking coaches" demonstrate how to prepare dishes and give away recipes and samples.

At lunchtime, shoppers line up to buy sushi, crab cake sandwiches, pizza or subs.

In the Sterling store — one of the chain's biggest at 130,000 square feet — children can climb in a supervised play area.
