Lizzie, you probably remember how the overseas folks are ahead of our primary and secondary schools in mathematics? We all had discussed this on SI a year or so ago, what math is taught when in what courses overseas. RE: "we know we have fallen in academia" We already have fallen behind. We can't deny, ignore, or forget. Competitive people know where their competition is. RE: "I would look at the number of obvious inventions/companies etc " Investments initially feeds those companies inventing. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) was the largest to China - surpassed the USA last year - for the first time ever. Regards, Amy J
