We generally advise that a good, year-round wind turbine site isn’t a place that you’d want to live. It takes average wind speeds of 8 to 9 mph and up, to make a really good site. That’s honestly more wind than most folks are comfortable living with. But this is where the beauty of hybrid systems comes in. Many, very happily livable sites do produce 8 mph and over during certain times of the year, or when storms are passing through. Tower height and location also make a big difference. Wind speeds average 50% to 60% higher at 100 feet compared to ground level (see chart in the wind section). Wind systems these days are almost always designed as wind/solar hybrids for year-round reliability. The only common exceptions are systems designed for utility intertie; they feed excess power back into the utility, and turn the meter backwards.

Soups...That wasn't an endorsement of Real Goods; just an example.
Another local... cheaper, too. I think these guys are better, anyway. Look around the net.
Real Goods is a really far out place to wander around in, and outside, too. Big solar set-up, lots of creative recycling inside, demonstration garden. When they first built the place, they brought in a bunch of old cars and planted trees in them. Somewhat controversial, but we liked it, even then. Now the cars are all a nice rusty brown color, and the trees have all grown up. Really cool. But they seem to be a bit yuppie oriented. I haven't gotten much from them, so they may be ok, but looks like little Calpella is 300 bux cheaper. If you get one of these suckers, I'll never mention your razor again :-)

One more cost, if you are going to interface with the grid, which means you don't need batteries; an inverter...

(From 101 reasons why a zapsucker is as good as a Ratzinger)

UTILITY INTERFACE CATALOG

HOW TO SIZE YOUR UTILITY INTERFACE SYSTEM
Get your utility bill. Make sure it's your electric service only, not the gas service.
Now fill in the blanks below.
Usage_______Billing Days_________Divide Usage by Billing Days_________
This is your average daily Kw hr usage. Divide this by 5 (average sun hours in most areas of California). This is the size of sytem you need to eliminate your electric bill.

Example:
Usage=1,130kWH
Billing Days=30
Divide Usage by Billing Days=37.66 kWh per day on average.
Divide this by 5 = 7.53kW System

Therefore combining our 5.035 system with a 2.5 system (see below) will total 7.535 kW and will eliminate your electric utility bill. If you have questions don't hesitate to call us at 888-228-9694 (toll free) or 707-485-0588.

UTILITY INTERFACE SYSTEMS
1. ALL SYSTEMS QUOTED ARE BASED ON CEC RATED OUTPUT.
2. ALL SYSTEMS QUOTED INCLUDE AT LEAST 2 SOLAR PANEL HIGH VOLTAGE DISCONNECTS (OUTDOOR, 30 AMP AT 600VDC). MOST MUNICIPALITIES NOW REQUIRE DISCONNECTS ON THE ROOF (FIRE DEPARTMENT) AND AT THE INVERTERS (SERVICE DISCONNECT).
3. ALL SYSTEMS QUOTED INCLUDE THE REQUIRED UTILITY DISCONNECT
4. ALL SYSTEMS QUOTED INCLUDE SMA INVERTERS WITH DISPLAY (SBD).
5. MOUNTING SPECIFICATIONS QUOTED ARE FULLY ENGINEERED FOR 50 LBS PER SQ FT AND 125 MPH WIND. ENGINEERING SPECIFICATIONS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. WE CANNOT QUOTE YOU THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO MOUNT THE RAIL SYSTEM ON YOUR ROOF UNTIL WE KNOW WHAT KIND OF ROOF YOU HAVE. FOR MORE INFORMATION SCROLL DOWN TO "UTILITY INTERFACE COMPONENTS" ON THIS PAGE FOR "SOLAR MOUNTING KITS" & "SYSTEM INSTALLATION". WE ALSO HAVE GROUND MOUNTS AVAILABLE.

The conversion efficiency of the Kyocera solar cell is 15%. These cells are encapsulated between a tempered glass cover and an EVA back shield to provide maximum protection from the most severe environmental conditions. The entire laminate is installed in an anodized aluminum frame providing structural strength and easy installation. KC 187 modules are equiped with plug in connectors. UL 1703 certified. ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 qualified. 25 year limited warranty. For more information go to kyocerasolar.com or call us at 888-228-9694 (toll free).

SOLAR PANEL MOUNTING KITS FOR KC 187:.
Mounting kits quoted are FASTJACK(tm), with FASTTRACK (tm)rail systems. Made of high quality stainless steel and anodized aluminum. One fasttrack rail system (two rails with appropriate hardware) accommodate 3 KC 187 solar panels. Fasttracks come with hardware to mount on preexisting flat roof, such as asphalt shingles. Other roof styles and new roofs usually need fastjacks to support the rail systems. Fastjacks are machined mounts that bolt right into rafters and come with appropriate Oaty flashing. These are designed to accommodate any roof preexisting or new. These are clip and rail systems very simple to install. If you want to put two rails together you need a "Splice Kit and more panel inter connectors. These mounts are pre-engineered and pass all local codes. For more info go to www.rooftrac.com.

SYSTEM INSTALLATION: We normally have Fast Jacks installed by your roofer. If you do not have a roofer we have roofers in the Bay Area and many parts of California who install Fast Jacks for us (under our guidance). We usually do the layout, they install them (this keeps your roof warrantee intact and virtually eliminates roofing problems). Then, we come on site and install the Fast Track rail system and solar panels. We also have many local electricians help us with system installations. We strive to get as many local companies involved as possible. We are licensed solar and electrical contractors (C-10 and C-46 #620243) and could do all the work ourselves. However, we have found it benificial to involve local reputable companies with expertise in local code compliance, familiarity with local utility regulations and for trouble shooting any system problems. This is a win, win solution for everyone. Customers get local support, plus our years of experience and competitiveness in this industry.

GROUND MOUNTING SYSTEMS:
Ground mounts are engineered for a 6' span. The rails are stronger to accomodate the span. Two rails are mounted on 1 1/4" galvanized steel pipe with stainless steel U bolts. Holleander T's connect the horizontal piping to the vertical pipe "legs" thatare cemented in 1' x 2' holes.
UTILITY DISCONNECT SWITCH: Some utility companies require visually open, lockable knife switch disconnects between the inverter(s) and the service entrance. Multiple inverter systems must be designed and installed to use only one utility disconnect switch.

To calculate the CEC Power Rating, multiply the Solar Panel PTC Rating by the number of panels. Multiply this result by the Inverter Efficiency. This gives you the CEC System Power Rating. Multiply this number by 5 (average sun hours) to get the CEC System Daily Power Rating.
To calculate the system maximum rebate multiply the CEC System Power Rating (solar panel PTC rating x number of panels x inverter efficiency) times the rebate amount(now $2.80 per watt).

Maybe some light reading for you while in the slammer...
I was reading Mother Earth News B4 bed, when the light came on; I was looking at plans for their Blue Max home made wind turbine. Issues 93, 94, from'85.
If you are interested, and can't get a copy, I can xerox and mail them to you.
Couldn't find the plans on-line, but here is a primer...
