Actually slander against a politician is legal. Those in public life cannot sue for libel. I read that on a blog and it makes sense since I can't think of a single politician ever to sue for libel or slander.

Therefore, the smearvet liars, Drudge, Hannity, Malkin and others knew they could get away with saying anything they wanted to, the bigger the lie the better, and they'd never be held accountable. In fact the rightwingers would even give them medals for telling the biggest lies.
