Nadine, since it's such a problem, I'd have thought the soldiers could carry a bright flashing series of lights which go red blue orange red blue orange red blue orange with a decent beam in the direction where shooting is about to start if anyone seeing those bright lights continues to approach the lights.

Gesticulating hands are not much use, especially at night and especially if it's raining.

Since it's such a problem, with innocent people constantly being shot to pieces, it would seem the problem of approaching vehicles could be easily fixed.

That is, if anyone is actually interested in solving the problem instead of just letting rip with a bunch of ammunition.

I'm sure anyone in Iraq knows not to approach Americans, or they risk being instantly converted to decomposing organic matter for recycling into the biosphere. So all that's needed is to make the presence of Americans obvious.
