An airplane has aluminium in it's skin. A metal that oxidizes with the release of a large amount of energy.

If Peterborough in the UK (a town I know fairly well) is the centre of fireball intensity in the world, I feel a little more at ease now -g-

The general scientific view is that fire balls are little understood phenomenon. Agreed.

When in the USA during thunderstorms, I was happy with that the truck I was driving was an effective faraday cage, but was concerned there was loads of volatile gasoline in the tank. Hence my desire to minimize the risk by being near lots of other vehicles.

I understand there is a similar feeling when people are thrown into shark infested waters during a disaster at sea. You just have a strong wish to have lots of other people struggling in the water around you, so maybe you can get away unnoticed.
