Mr.G. is human. In late 96 he became concerned about the "exuberance", but by '99 he was sold - he bought the idea of the "New Economy". At the present time he is not convinced that deficits are a problem, but the odds are that some day he may change his mind. He may find that translating much of the world's savings into claims against American assets may not have been a great idea, after all...

Someone made a joke - maybe I should Google it? - that the problem with borrowing is that you take other people's money, and only for a period of time - but you have to pay back with your own, and forever. And... interest is not high these days, but it still adds up.
