Not a very good article. Carriers are already selling all kinds of phones that allow "download" of music without going over the air, and have been for a year already. The Nokia phones in that series are nice - very nice - and they will sell a lot of them - but $700 phones are not where the mass-market is.

Unfortunately, phones are considerably more complicated than mp3 players and Apple has zero experience or expertise in making one or getting one approved. The best they can hope for is to add a bit of software to someone else's product. It's better than nothing, but the money in that is a far cry from what has been generated by the iPod franchise.

I think Apple could very well stay ahead of the curve, if they keep innovating.

Exactly. and why wouldn't they be able to?

That article is semi ridiculous imo. It's practically a given that evryone who has an iPod already has a cell phone...so what... How many people are willing to scrap both, and all the associated peripherals that they've already bought for thier iPod, to buy an Nokia music cellphone if it doesn't fit into existing iPod peripherals? Not many imo.

The iPod aftermarket products represent a huge investment base on the existing iPod design. I can't believe anyone would think that all those dollars spent for iPod docks, auto transponders, bose players etc. are going to be shelved just for a new cellphone that stores music.

Apple will probably steal mkt share from the Nokia's of the world if/when it releases an iPod design cell phone, rather than lose mkt share to them.
