Like Vietnam, we're still not sure who these "insurgents" are. We say Zarqawi leads them, but it remains unclear as to whether Zarqawi even exists.

1. The US Military does not know:

- how many insurgents there are
- how many insurgent sympathizers there are
- where they are
- who they are
- if the people they arrest as insurgents really are insurgents
- what the difference is between an insurgent and a criminal
- what the difference is between an AQ type fundamentalist and an Iraqi citizen driven (by us) beyond despair
- how many of those in the Iraqi security forces are insurgents

2. The US Military has been wrong-wrong-wrong and has managed to level Fallujah, a city of 300,000 people and the level of violence WENT UP.

3. Insurgency isn't a genetic condition, it's an activity that anyone can start up at any time.

4. I have heard that the US Military has 'caught the number 3 man in AQ' something like five times. This last guy may not be who they think he is AND he wasn't even on the US Military's watch list. OK, that was Pakistan but close enough for government work and indicative of the difficulty in getting at small pockets of people hiding in plain sight.

5. The Shia are motivated to grab power and abuse the Sunnis. The Sunnis aren't going to be pleased with this...would you be? The Kurds are motivated to take the Kirkuk oil fields AND secede from Iraq. Turkey would not be pleased, the Shia and the Sunnis would not be pleased either.

6. You have the last point correct, "then that's their problem.' That's exactly my point. They are sovereign, they have a mess made by us, we move forward by getting the heck out and leaving them (with aid) to their own devices.
