Iraq is doing "just fine"? 265 dead in two weeks, buddy.
What drugs are you on? You mean our troops are garrisoned so don't get killed as often as before? Or some far corners of Iraq are not insurgent strongholds so are relatively peaceful? OK fine, but in case you hadn't noticed, we have a brewing civil war on our hands.

And no, I'm not blaming our troops. They do a fine job, with the exception of a few bad apples. But the whole situation is a black tunnel with only a few flickers of possible light at the end of it. I'll bet ten years from now we'll still have a mess in Iraq. Also notice the fact there are no UN peacekeepers or NATO troops, which handled Kosovo quite nicely.

The other things that aren't doing fine are the Halliburton scandals, the missing billions, the missing oil money and the cost of oil since we invaded that place. All big problems.

Did you read the previous post where I showed fatalities in Iraq vs Vietnam? Vietnam started slowly then progressed to have more than twice the number of troops we have in Iraq. The 'lethality' rate is significantly lower in Iraq due to better field medical services.

The US Military readily admits that the sophistication of the insurgents is improving and they are more organized. They were flipping Bradleys with roadside bombs and are they now shooting down planes? Whatever happened to those jets? Besides, tanks which are supposed to move a handful of miles a day are having their treads worn out by the sheer amount of movement they're subjected to in harsh desert conditions. We've already run out of small arms ammo once and are all Humvees finally armored?

We also do not know how many die from wounds, how many commit suicide or even how many have lost limbs or will destroy their lives with PTSD. The government has learned that this kind of information really causes the American Public to think twice about war. Even with that paucity of info, the majority of Americans think Iraq was NOT WORTH IT.

If you're so into voting with straight majorities, then you should be advocating a pull out and a finger pointing impeachment exercise based on that vote ALONE.

======== Iraq Poll
csmonitor.com
" Other telling findings of the survey were that an overwhelming majority of Iraqis, 71 percent (and that figure rises to 81 percent if the Kurdish areas in the north are excluded), now see the US-led coalition as an occupying force and not as liberators. USA Today reports that a solid majority, almost 60 percent, want the US and its allies to leave immediately, even if it means the security situation will deteriorate."

---------
SH did nothing, nada to threaten the US of A. He was a SECULAR leader who disliked FUNDAMENTALISTS as a threat to his regime. Do you not comprehend the politics of the area? Fundamentalists want to sweep out secular regimes and despotic tyrannical ones like the Saudis and sweep in despotic religious regimes along the lines (probably) of Iran.

That al Sistani keeps a low profile but wields a big stick is very telling. That Iraqi women are now going under the veil when they weren't under SH is also very telling. That the Islamic Revolution this and that did very well in the election is also telling.

What in the world do you think the Shias are going to do? Install American or British style liberal democracies there?

They want to install Sharia....ooops!

====== It is never 'too late' to change a bad course. $300 billion is just 'to date' and when did the government ever budget properly? These idiots put all of the Iraqi oil money onto a laptop computer run by a 20 something geek on a spreadsheet. They've lost track of at least $8.8 billion of that money...geez, ya think?

====== The purpose of the Senate is to balance the power of the 'mob' which is represented by the House. It is there to provide protection for the minority view which is now being blown up by Frist and his nuclear, kill-democracy option.
