That's all well and good in the abstract, but I simply can't imagine what a new Dem alternative might look like. It's not like there are a lot of options. Raise the retirement age and/or the ceiling on taxable wages and lose the private accounts, I suppose. Dems have already addressed those, just haven't announced the package as an official Dem proposal.

We used to be a two party system. they are only getting support from the extreme side.

People in the middle don't donate to campaigns. They may vote but they don't contribute. They have to cater to their off-center base just as the Reps have to.

Seems to me that the Dems are in a no-win situation in terms of getting a majority near term. Their best bet, I think, is for the Reps to overreach.
