Oh yeah. I actually have 2 physical drives. If you have an extra drive you don't need to partition although there are still a few reasons it might be handy (legacy system 9 apps, odds and ends) and no real good reasons not to except space. It doesn't hurt anything to have extra partitions. I've never heard of partitioning causing any problems on a Mac.

In frozenchosen's case it was his wife's laptop. You can, of course, carry around an extra firewire drive but that is less convenient. And I think there were some boot from firewire issues at one time. But the main thing is to have that back up boot disk some where and partitioning is very convenient and easy to do if you have the extra 1.5 or so Gigs you need.
