What we have, in fact, is a promise. What we don't have is money. Those folks who have insisted that SS is "fully funded" until 205X are perpetrating a hoax given that it's a promise with no money.

The money in the SS trust was lent out. In GAAP money that is lent out is counted as money on the balance sheet.

What hoax are you people talking about?

"The Social Security surplus, which Congress happily spends every year, peaks in 2008. Which means that starting in four years (and for every year thereafter) a budgetary squeeze begins, requiring new taxation or new borrowing." I think what he means is eminently clear.

The surplus has been spent. It has not been stolen. The government borrowed that money. Like anyone else the government borrows money from, the government intends to pay it back. Why is social security different?

Why blame the budget deficit on the social security system?

I understand your philosophy. People should be responsible for their own economic well being. Government should stay out of it. I think Krauthammer feels the same way - but I think he is being deceptive about it. He will not come out and say that. He is out to muddy the waters. He is out to trash his opposition - rather than to trust the people and putting out the intellectual argument and then let the people decide ont the merits.

kholt, There never was a "trust fund" and anyone that knows anything, knows it. There's no reason to kick a dead horse.

Krauthammer is just one person who is writing about his opinion, or theory. That is just as off the wall as accepting the idea that there was a trust fund.

No one can see the future, and can only make stabs at what will happen. There are many ways to change the base of SS, and the only solution is for someone to come up with a workable plan, without being bombarded by all of the different factions with other, or faulty, opinions.

An opinion is a far cry from the truth.
