I believe marijuana should be legalized, though heavily regulated and taxed. When I worked in Holland, I found out that when it's legal, the kids have little or no interest in it. Dutch kids rarely smoke pot. Plus they have very little hard drug or mafia problems. Like Prohibition, making marijuana illegal doesn't work and just creates more crime. Marijuana has never killed anyone and is less harmful than alcohol, many pharmacuticals and tobacco. Of course it's not harm-less and should be tightly controlled.

Two big upsides to legalizing pot are that the tax revenues and law enforcemnt savings could pay for a big chunk of our health care costs. Also that the hemp plant could replace trees as our main source of paper pump. Hemp can also be used for fuel oil which we desperately need. Keeping hemp (a form of marijuana that doesn't get you high) is the most foolish thing of all.

I don't know where Kerry stands on this.
