And who manufactures desire? Big companies. People are sheeple when it comes to the sophisticated marketing aimed at them today, which uses their deepest psychological weaknesses in order to manipulate them (same with political campaigns). Our days are numbered as a "democracy" if we even still are one- we are becoming (or already are) a corporate oligarchy. I don't think there is much hope we won't get more and more that way, until we finally become fascist. I think we past the tipping point a while ago. That said, most people won't even notice, as long as they can still buy a four slice bagel toaster, and get nice clothes at the Gap.
