You remember that movie about Jaime Escalante? He came to teaching from the professional world and assumed that kids could learn calculus if they were well-taught. THAT's the kind of teacher we need more of. I realize it's expecting a lot for too little pay. I'm all for more pay for teachers, except bad ones. I would be a really really bad teacher. I'm not sure I would last past lunchtime on the first day. One thing I think is missing from some of today's teaching: "WHY you should WANT to learn this."
