Read recently about terrible russian population demographics. Russian people seem to be doing voluntary what chinese commissars ordered regarding population. Cant go to far with 1 kid per family. I think i saw that population numbers actually will decline over the next 20 years or so. And then there is the alcohol problem--5 bottles of vodka a week for the average male russian drinker.
Thats what putin has to contend with along with a terrorist type insurgency. My feeling is that what he is doing now by centralizing authority, controlling capitalism, and promoting the merits of the old USSR is less trying to bring back stalin and more trying to create De Gaulle for Russia. For that he must appear strong and independent, particularly of the their old adversary and worlds only super power--US.
But this independence doesnt kill the relationship with bush. Bush realizes whats going on and sympathises while not giving up his call for democracy for russia and neighbors. mike
