Kerry DID stay on message, and that was the trouble. When the smear campaign hit, he sent Cleland the the real eyewitness SWiftVets to oppose it, but the rightwing dropped everything and put it into the Smear attacks. So Kerry was talking jobs and health care while the political talkshows were buzzing with wild accusations that Kerry was a liar, traitor, faked injuries and even murdered innocent children. Pure trash but nevertheless getting airplay.

I was urging my Kerry staffer friend then to hold a press conference where all accusations would be openly and honestly dealt with and debunked. The Kerry guy told me "We can't do that, that would be knocking us off message". Well I was right. Kerry should have dealth with the smears right off the bar, but that also is a double-edged sword.

Then the GOP came in with their coinvention and kept the smears coming. Zell MIller types raving that Jk is weak on defense when they had the exact same defence voting record in the senate. Just more BS. And so what if JK is more liberal than Zell Miller? Zell's off the deep end these days?

Anyway, smears work. You just have to be totally unethical and not believe in hell. Apparently Rove and Bush don't. And the smearvets themselves were so filled with hate and/or paid off that they'd say anything. They just made up most of it. The rest was twisted and turned around from an extreme rightwing POV to look un-American.

Kerry lost the election by 55,000 swingvotes in Ohio., The smear campaign made the difference. But this will not be forgotten. The rightwing will pay for this someday.
