Krishnadas EE Times (05/09/2005 8:16 AM EDT) BANGALORE, India — The India Semiconductor Association (ISA) has commissioned a compehensive survey of the Indian chip industry, with findings expected in about six months. ISA commissioned consulting firm Frost & Sullivan (Palo Alto, Calif.) to conduct the study. Despite growing interest here, there has been no comprehensive, accurate market estimates of IC demand and supply, employment or market composition, the ISA said. "This long overdue study will fill that long existing gap," said ISA Chairman Rajendra Khare. The study will seek to provide a clearer picture of chip consumption here, growth areas and the prospects for developing infrastructure. The study "will cover chip design, hardware design services, embedded software development, consumption of semiconductor, projected manpower needs for various activities in the ecosystem, impact of the development of semiconductor network on the Indian economy, untapped opportunities and gaps in the current ecosystem," said Anand Rangachary, director of Frost & Sullivan, India. According to estimates, Indian semiconductor consumption totals about $3 billion annually while design services garner about $600 million. Study sponsor Citigroup said it sees big opportunities in India, which it said is playing an increasingly important role in the global electronics supply chain. "This is an important initiative to promote recognition of the industry," said Simon Parker, head of Citigroup's technology, media and telecom investment banking practice in Asia.
