Mass grave found in Irbil

Monday, May 9, 2005 (Irbil):

A mass grave was uncovered close to an old military department in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil on Sunday, Iraqi officials today said.

Many of the bodies, including women and children, were said to be wearing traditional Kurdish costume that were riddled with bullet holes.

Bagdar Ismael, who works at the Zerovani Centre in Irbil, said he thought the victims had been killed and buried during Saddam Hussein's regime.

Since the end of the US-led war in Iraq, the Kurds have found dozens of mass graves in the area under their control in Sulaimaniya, Irbil, Duhok and Kirkuk provinces.

Saddam Hussein's regime is believed to be responsible for the disappearances of over 2 lakh Kurds in the Anfal campaigns in 1988, the deportation of Feyli Kurds in 1980 and the disappearance of over 7000 Barzanis in 1983 during the attack in Irbil. (AP)
