It seems that they either check for length directly, or at least are more impressed by a long essay when they read it, no matter how high or low the quality of its spelling, grammar, punctuation is, and no matter how hard or easy it is to read, how interesting and/or valid the ideas and facts in the essay are, or how creatively it is put together. Perhaps these things are not totally ignored but writing a large essay seems to be enough to get a good grade anyway, so they can't be paying too much attention to them.
