I've flown into the ski resorts but I haven't done much driving around in the Snowy River area. Well I spent several days exploring the back side by travelling east from Olinda Vic. in an auto, before continuing back down to the Prom to meet some friends. But that's still quite a long ways west of the Snowy River park.

A lot of the coast east of Canberra is beautiful. Easy access by a boat, but I have no idea what the road access is like, I haven't spent much time in Canberra. It reminds me of a sister city twin of Brasilia. I do want to spend more time on either side of it though.

The only road I've traveled that sounded like what you describe was north of Queenstown in NZ, and that wasn't deliberate on my part. If I had known what was ahead I'd never have taken it. Well to be fair, there was a sign with a fairly blunt warning - but I thought it was an exaggeration. Silly me.
