In Oklahoma, students from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma gathered at the Edmond AARP office with a clear message: Social Security is at risk and needs fixing. “What we are talking about is our future,” said Nat Harding, a senior at the University of Oklahoma. “We are concerned that our generation will be the victims if something isn’t done now to shore up the Social Security system. We are enthused that the President is not backing down from this effort and polls show his message is resonating.” “You might not think there is much campus discussion of this issue, but there is,” said Michael Carnuccio, a graduate teaching assistant at Oklahoma State University. “We are organizing meetings and leading the discussion to make sure college students get involved to help protect their future retirements.” President Bush’s Social Security comments followed a 60-day tour in which he urged Americans and Congress to realize the importance of solving the Social Security crisis. Recent polls show the effectiveness of the tour. A Harris poll taken before the tour showed only 3 percent of Americans felt Social Security was the top issue facing the government. After the tour, that number shot to 31 percent. Another poll shows 81 percent of Americans believe the system needs to be changed if it is to remain financially solvent. “No matter what their age, as Americans become more informed about this issue, they see the need for reform and modernization,” said Joe Windes, a Norman senior citizen volunteer with the National Center for Policy Analysis. “The President is right to continue to push for tough but necessary changes.”teamncpa.org
