OT: If you haven't read it, Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" gives a very sardonic view of the homeless situation in London for that time (1920s, I guess) and the attitude of the "beneficiaries" towards the various agenies. Orwell especially had it in for the Salvation Army, which I think of as a good thing in the United States, though I admit I haven't had to avail myself of their assistance.

I mentioned on another thread how I was trying to reconcile the fact that most people in France now never had it so good, and how high the standard of living is for most poeple--and yet there are many more beggars around Paris than there have been during probably the last fifty years. I think that people in the United States may do a much better job of finding ways to bring immigrants of all kinds (African, Mexican, Vietnamese (including Montagnards), various Middle Easterners, etc. into the work force, and it may be easier in the United States to establish small enterprises. I really do not know
