So what happens if Kerkorian ups his stake of GM to 12%. He
has an opportunity to gain significant leverage on any further
GM faux pas.

Rumors and Reality: If only it were easy to tell the difference. Today, the market was freaked out by rumors that another LTCM-type disaster could be afoot. Several hedge funds reportedly suffered losses shorting GM shares, but did one implode? If so, which Street firm would bear the brunt of it? What about losses in the pools of debt known as CDOs? (Those are collateralized debt obligations, in case you forgot.) One thing is for sure: Earlier this year, this market was a story of all greed and no fear. Now, some fear is creeping in. And perhaps that’s a good thing. The Dow closed down 103.23 at 10,281.11, while the Nasdaq fell 16.90 to 1962.77.
