I hate self esteem. We have it at work. They keep changing names, but it is recognition for doing your job. "Blah blah worked really hard today when it was busy.Thank you." We are grown-up mostly parent type people; give me an effing break. Ooooo, Ratty is ranting. Reminds me of when my kids were young. Artist, musician, good person, whatever of the week, and everybody had to get something once so they would feel good. Shit.

I think one of the main problems is that academic acheivment in primary and seconday schools is NOT cool, and is punished by your peers. If you're smart, the first thing you learn is to hide it.
If you're tough enough, you survive until college, where you learn the sororities and frats have the test answers and boilerplate papers.
The unspoken message of our whole culture, from Bush the proud "C" student on down, is that who you know, not what you know, is what counts.
