Only the voters in Blair's home constituency would have voted for him directly as their Member of Parliament.

By voting for any Labor candidate nationwide, however, you are endorsing (or rejecting the other party) the party leadership that the candidate you vote for locally will support in Parliament as Prime Minister.

Nobody voted for Tony Blair. They voted for their local Labor MP. Blair had enough to remain as PM. Now it seems, his own MP's want him to step down, to be replaced by his #2, Gordon Brown, who has been against the Iraq misadventure from the get go.
The Conservatives, party of Margret Thatcher, did even worse. It seems almost NO ONE in Britain wants THEM back in power.
