That's not really a problem. Hospitals/doctors go a long way in figuring out the Medicare laws. If nothing else, that's how they maximize their receipts. But Medicare doesn't cover 100% of all medical bills, have a few angeoplasties or other surgical procedures and the bills can stack up pretty fast.

One of the generic problems that she and many older people have is an extreme aversion to anything that resembles dependence. Our society/culture has stressed "independence" as such a positive character trait that we've lost the value of family support.
