Well Many could give you a far better explanation of the purpose of a clear cut but the short answer is, harvest the mature trees and allow the new growth to get sun and do it's thing. The new clear area will supply cover and an excellent feed source for deer and other animals. First stuff up will be excellent feed and the berries come in and then eventually you have a regrowth forest with another crop of mature trees. Now I know you hate clear cuts because they are ugly at first but they are a wonderful thing for the wildlife and for the forest. A big mature forest might be nice for you to look at but the critters need browse and you don't find that in mature forest because of the canopy not allowing sunlight through. It also makes little sense for trees to just die rather then harvest them IMO. But of course if you keep logging off limits long enough then you will get enough dead trees and other fuels that you will get natures version of the clear cut, a forest fire. So IMO you will eventually get a clear cut one way or the other. I prefer to do it in a more controlled way:)
