Some people like van Gogh; I like books. I like them for themselves, the way they feel, the way they look, the way they smell, the creativity that went into their being, what you can do with them, the way they wait for you until you're ready, the stimulus that they give your mind, the comfort they give your spirit.

My books are there because I want them. I don't think of them as accessories, but as friends. Certainly they are not trophies of any kind. I didn't kill them, and nobody stuffed them, except with the best intellect they could muster.

Need any more reasons? I got 'em.

I take advantage of people who dispose of books after they've read them. I like to get for 25 cents what somebody paid 25 dollars for not too long ago. Last week I got two first run books for $2.00, nearly sixty dollars worth by the flyleaf price new.

Someday I will have to say good bye to my books, but not yet.
