It certainly isn't illegal. The pastor could do whatever he wanted, and the congregation was free to follow or leave for another church. Or go through the normal bureaucratic channels to remove him. Its very borderline. He was attempting to intimidate his parishioners into voting a particular way by threatening to kick them out of the church. Many of his parishioners were elderly. The elderly are particularly seen as vulnerable to such manipulation."- Third, there are schemes to corrupt the voting act of voters who do participate in the voting act to a limited extent. These include such things as schemes to «assist» voters in such a manner that the voter does not knowingly consent to electoral preferences that are placed on the ballot, schemes to pay voters for voting, schemes to intimidate voters through physical or economic means, schemes to cast multiple ballots, and schemes to induce voters to validate ballot documents (usually absentee ballots) by misrepresenting what the document is."democracy.ru This is far from the "US Taliban" as JF would like to portray it. Maybe relative to the degree of threats but the tactic is very similar. The Taliban threatened people with retribution if they did not behave in a particular. Now if the pastor got into public office and started dictating that citizens of a town become Christian or leave, that would obviously be illegal. I am surprised at your response to this matter. We definitely see the world very differently. It tells me that people are feeling very strongly about certain issues and that the schism that divides this country is not about to go away quietly. I think some people feel a little too strongly about issues that really don't matter in the long run. Meanwhile, most of us forget about the real problems underlying it all and choose to focus only on the surface. I think you are kidding yourself. I think you feel very strongly about certain issues but are constrained by your perception of what is proper, social etiquette from coming out more strongly on these issues. And I think that attitude is becoming more pervasive, not less in this country. I do know one thing if the war in Iraq is not ended soon, all hell will break out. ted
